Should I Wash My Car Before a Hail Damage Estimate?

After a hailstorm, many people wonder if they should wash their vehicle before taking it in for an estimate.

In most cases, yes—but there are a few exceptions.

Washing Helps Reveal Damage

A clean vehicle makes it easier to inspect:

  • Dents

  • Paint chips

  • Scratches

  • Cracked trim

  • Broken lights

Mud, pollen, road salt, and dust can hide damage.

Don't Polish or Wax

Avoid waxing or polishing the vehicle before the inspection.

Heavy waxes can sometimes reduce the visibility of subtle dents under specialized lighting.

If Glass Is Broken

If hail has broken a windshield or side window, cover the opening to keep the interior dry, but avoid making temporary repairs that could hide damage.

Professional Inspections Use Specialized Lighting

Even on a clean vehicle, many dents won't be visible in ordinary daylight.

Professional repair facilities use specialized lighting and reflection boards to identify damage that cannot be seen during a normal visual inspection.

The Bottom Line

A clean vehicle can help the inspection process, but the most important factor is having it inspected under proper lighting by experienced technicians.
