Understanding Common Terms on a Collision Repair Estimate

Writer: Joe AdamsJoe Adams

When you receive a repair estimate after an accident, you might come across terms that seem confusing if you're not familiar with the auto body repair industry. Insurance estimates and body shop repair orders often use shorthand in the operation column, which describes what needs to be done to each part of your vehicle.

To help you better understand your estimate, we’ve broken down some of the most common terms used in collision repair:

Common Auto Repair Estimate Terms

R&I – Remove and Install

This means a part will be removed from your vehicle and then reinstalled after repairs are completed. It is typically used when a part doesn’t need to be replaced but must be taken off temporarily for access.

Repl – Replace

This means a damaged part will be completely removed and a new part will be installed in its place. This is common for severely damaged components.

Rpr – Repair

Instead of replacing a part, it will be repaired, which may involve dent removal, sanding, reshaping, or welding.

Refn – Refinish

This refers to painting or refinishing a part, typically after a repair or replacement, to restore the original look.

Sect – Section

This means only a portion of a panel or structure will be replaced instead of the entire piece. It is often used in frame repairs or larger body panels.

Algn – Align

This refers to realigning vehicle components, such as suspension parts, doors, or frames, to ensure they fit properly after repairs.

Subl – Sublet

This means the repair shop is outsourcing a specific service to another specialist, such as glass replacement or advanced electronics recalibration.

Blnd – Blend

Blending is a painting technique used to match new paint with the existing color seamlessly. It ensures that repairs are not visible.

O/H – Overhaul

This means a part or system will be disassembled, inspected, and rebuilt, often used for mechanical repairs.

Why Understanding These Terms Matters

Knowing these terms can help you make sense of your estimate, understand what repairs are being performed, and communicate effectively with your body shop or insurance company. If you have any questions about your estimate or repairs, our team at Solon Collision is happy to help!
