Understanding Part Types on a Collision Repair Estimate

Writer: Joe AdamsJoe Adams

When you receive a collision repair estimate, you might notice different designations next to the parts listed as REPL (Replace). These designations indicate the type and source of the replacement part, which can affect price, fit, and quality.

Below, we’ll break down the most common part designations you might see on your estimate and what they mean.

Types of Replacement Parts in Collision Repair

OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturer (No Designation)

If there’s no special marking next to a part, it typically means it is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) part. This means the part is made by the same company that built your vehicle and is identical to the one originally installed.

Best fit and quality

Matches factory specifications

Often preferred for warranty repairs

Used / Recycled / RECY / LKQ – Salvaged OEM Parts

If a part is labeled Used, Recycled, RECY, or LKQ, this means the part was previously installed on another vehicle and has been removed from a salvage or junkyard car.

More affordable than new OEM parts

Still factory-made, so fitment is typically good

⚠️ May have wear and tear or slight imperfections

A/M – Aftermarket Parts

Parts marked A/M are aftermarket parts, meaning they are not made by the original manufacturer but by third-party companies.

Usually cheaper than OEM

More options available

⚠️ May not fit as perfectly as OEM

CAPA – Certified Automotive Parts Association (Aftermarket Certified)

Parts labeled CAPA are aftermarket parts that have been independently tested and certified to meet OEM-like standards for quality and fit.

Stricter quality standards than regular aftermarket parts

More reliable fit and durability

⚠️ Still not made by the original manufacturer

Which Type of Part Is Best for My Repair?

The best part type for your repair depends on your budget, insurance coverage, and the shop’s recommendations.

  • OEM parts are the best for fit and quality but can be expensive.

  • Used/recycled/LKQ parts can save money while keeping OEM quality.

  • Aftermarket parts vary in quality—CAPA-certified ones are more reliable.

  • Insurance policies may dictate which parts are used in your repair.
