Will Hail Damage Show Up on Carfax?

Many vehicle owners wonder whether repairing hail damage will affect their vehicle history report.

The answer is: it depends.

Carfax Doesn't Inspect Vehicles

Carfax receives information from a variety of reporting sources, including:

  • Insurance companies

  • Collision repair facilities that report repairs

  • Police reports

  • State agencies

  • Vehicle inspections

  • Other participating businesses

If no source reports the repair, it may never appear.

Cosmetic Repairs May or May Not Be Reported

Some hail repairs appear on a vehicle history report.

Others never do.

There is no guarantee either way.

Should That Affect Your Decision?

Most owners choose to repair hail damage because:

  • It restores the vehicle's appearance.

  • It helps protect resale value.

  • It addresses cracked paint or other issues that could worsen over time.

  • Insurance often covers the repair if you have comprehensive coverage, subject to your deductible.

Whether a repair appears on a vehicle history report is generally outside the vehicle owner's control.

The Bottom Line

A vehicle history report should not be the deciding factor in whether you repair hail damage. The more important consideration is restoring your vehicle properly and documenting the repair process.
